Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine the clinical use of the Korean version of the Modified-Checklist of Autism in Toddlers (KM-CHAT) in Korean children. Research questions were to compare the rates of the positive identification between initial screening and follow-up interview on those items failed on the initial screening; to compare identification rate differences by genders and in three age groups; and to examine response patterns on the 23 items between screen positive and negative groups.

Methods: Parents of children (age between 16 and 36 months old) were recruited to complete the Korean version of the M-CHAT (23 items of yes/no responses) from private/public day care centers in Cheonan, Korea. The collected M-CHAT responses (n=208) were scored using an automatic scoring program which Diana Robins provided on her Website.

Results: There were notable differences in screen positive rates between the initial and follow-up screening. No gender and age group differences were observed. Response distribution analysis revealed remarkable differences on two items after the follow-up interview. This difference occurred in both screen positive and negative groups.

Conclusion: This preliminary result indicates that follow-up interviews are warranted for those children who screen positive on the initial screening. It will be useful to have the trained personnel (speech-language therapists, pediatricians, nurses, etc.) conduct the follow-up interview immediately after screening of 16-36 months old Korean children with the KM-CHAT. Two specific items that revealed remarkably high fail responses should be considered for revision of the Korean translation.
